Treatment Methods //

There are many treatment methods for varicose veins, including endovenous ablation (EVLA), cyanoacrylate venous closure (superglue), radiofrequencey ablation (RFA), injection microsclerotherapy, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS), ambulatory mini-phlebectomy, cutaneous laser, high ligation and stripping, compression therapy.

Many patients have different types of vein lesions in their legs and need integrated therapy.

ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA)

Endovenous laser ablation is a walk-in-walk-out procedure. It is used for closure of the refluxing truncal veins, such as great or small saphenous veins. It can also be used for the incompetent perforating veins.

The basic principle of this treatment is the heat-induced venous occlusion from the laser energy. Laser lights with different wave lengths have different absorption chromophores. For example, the 980 nm diode laser is mainly absorbed by hemoglobin in venous blood while the new 1470 nm diode laser is absorbed by water which is abundant in both blood and venous wall.

Procedure: Under local anesthesia, the target vein is punctured under sono-guide. The laser fiber is inserted into the vein via the needle. Then the target vein is closed by the heat from the laser light. The venous reflux is abolished and the patient can walk immediately after the procedure.
