Treatment Methods //

There are many treatment methods for varicose veins, including endovenous ablation (EVLA), cyanoacrylate venous closure (superglue), radiofrequencey ablation (RFA), injection microsclerotherapy, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS), ambulatory mini-phlebectomy, cutaneous laser, high ligation and stripping, compression therapy.

Many patients have different types of vein lesions in their legs and need integrated therapy.

HIGH LIGATION AND STRIPPING (HLS)

This is the traditional operation for great saphenous veins. Under spinal or general anesthesia, an inguinal wound and a knee wound are created. The proximal and distal sites of the great saphenous vein are identified in the two wound.  The great saphenous vein is ligated near its junction with the femoral vein. It is divided and then completely stripped out.

Disadvantages of this method is the longer recovery time, higher incidence of nerve injury, more hematoma, and higher recurrence rate in comparison with EVLA or RFA. Therefore, HLS is now the 3rd priority of treating great saphenous vein reflux, following EVLA, RFA and UGS.
